DFID - presentation of the report on Green Mini-Grids

IED presented in London on November 8th a report entitled “Identifying the gaps and building the evidence base on low carbon mini-grids”.

This report covers a review of the (few) existing installations, and an economic potential analysis.

The following chapters reveal the huge difficulty for the private sector to raise a financial profitability from those projects. Then, the need of an important support, politically and financially, from the public sector, is evident.

This report eventually includes best practices for implementation and operational management.

Solar energy studies in West Africa

 

IED draws up, on behalf of the WEAMU (West-African Economic and Monetary Union) a plan that aims to develop solar energy as part of the Regional Initiative for Sustainable Development.

The goal, by 2030, is to produce 82% of the electricity needed in the zone from renewable sources.

This involves setting up a long term plan for the development of solar energy.

In order to reach this goal, it is necessary to make a statement of existing institutions and organisations in each country of the area, the assets of the WAEMU countries in terms of human resources in this sector and to identify sites (local resource and network proximity) and technologies which fit the most the area.

IED is responsible for establishing this statement, and preparing the implementation of pilot projects in the area (technical and economic studies, draft of technical projects, funding schemes, call for bids).

To do so, a report has been written, concerning the economic and financial needs of the project, and its socio-environmental impacts, particularly in terms of CO2 emissions.

The project started in March 2013 with foreseen deadline by the end of the year.

IED brought its expertise regarding solar energy, but also its knowledge of the area, supported by a resident expert in Burkina Faso.

 

September 2013: OFID-GIZ joint meeting, in Vienna

 

Anjali SHANKER participated on September 9th in a joint meeting between OFID and GIZ (OPEC Fund for International Development & Deutsche Gesellchaft für Interzionale Zusammenarbeit) as a Board Member of the ARE (Alliance for Rural Electrification). This meeting was about access to modern energy services for rural communities.

September 2013: IED in French "Journal des Entreprises"

An article about IED with an interview of the Chairman Mr Denis RAMBAUD-MEASSON and the Managing Director Ms Anjali SHANKER was published in the French periodical "le Journal des Entreprises". It introduces the firm, its activities, policies, and socio-environmental priorities.

May 2013 : Training on Rural Electrification planning

In the framework of the project IREP, financed by the program Facility Energy Programme of the European Commission, two agents from the Rural Energy Agency of Tanzania, (REA - Countryman Energy Agency) came at the head office of IED in Francheville for a two weeks training on Rural Electrification planning. The programme included :

  • Geographical Information system (GIS)
  • Methodology in Rural Electrification with the tool GEOSIM © (decision-making tool)

The IREP objective is to improve the coordination of rural electrification investments in Tanzania by maximizing the impact of rural electrification on sustainable development through establishing effective cross sectorial investment and planning capacities and instruments using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and GEOSIM as the convening factor.
