Energetic diagnosis of the building of the “Mutuelle sociale Agricole” (MSA) - Grenoble

Country : France .
Client : MSA .
Start Date : 01 June 2008
Completion Date : 01 October 2008
Value of services : 13 423$
Funder : OPATB (Programm for Energy Efficiency in the building sector)
Associate/Partner : N/A

Description :
The building of the MSA, is located in the “OPATB des grands boulevards” perimeter (project of thermal and energetic improvement of the buildings). It was subject to a pre-diagnosis which showed that substantial gains could result from a better insulation of its outer shell.
Moreover the activity in this building evolved since its construction and the working spaces were consequently adapted to new technologies and organisation methods. This let appear summer comfort problems that the contracting authority wants to solve.
Finally, this building is under an obligation to renovate its front side. The works implementation is an opportunity to add an external insulation onto the building.
The object of the study is to advice the contracting authority concerning :
1. The current state of the building, the reality of the summer discomfort.
2. the impact of an external or internal insulation
3. the feasibility of a night ventilation
4. the feasibility of a summer air-conditioning

Description of the Actual Services Provided During this mission, a set of orientations and technical solutions were investigated. A dynamic thermal simulation software was used to this end. Three working axis were proposed for the improvement of the building :
- Treatment of the outer shell : wall insulation and window performance;
- Passive solar protections;
- Cooling : through an active system - common air-conditioning, or through a passive system - a night ventilation.
These solutions, their variations and combinations were simulated to observe the impacts and benefits that the contracting authority can expect.
This diagnosis is carried out within the framework of the OPATB of Grenoble. Partners are : ADEME, ANAH, the METRO, the city of Grenoble, the French State and the European Union – Concerto program/SESAC project.
