Description :
The project objective was to provide analytical inputs to the World Bank to inform its ongoing support to Peru to help the country define the best way to advance its electrification goals. This analytical support inluded:
i) rural electrification planning support using geospatial tools to identify optimal technological alternatives for expanding access to electricity in priority regions of Peru,
ii) assessment of sustainable approaches for providing rural electricity services and identification of suitable models for the priority areas of Peru.

Description of the Actual Services Provided IED carried out the following tasks:
Task 1: Data collection and validation
IED gathered, compiled, reviewed, and analyzed available data and upload all GIS data layers required for the development of a detailed geospatial analysis of potential least-cost electrification options
Task 2: Geospatial Mapping of the Unserved Population
The analysis depicted the spatial settlement patterns of the population without access to electricity, population density, and project the population for the base year 2020 and forecasted for 2025, geolocated within 1, 2, 25, and 50 kilometers of the existing electricity supply and distribution grids in the prioritized zones
Task 3: Analysis of Least-Cost Electrification Options
GIS based technical analysis of the electrification options using the specialized tool GEOSIM, including grid densification (1 km) and extension (2 km) to rural areas, and also off-grid electrification modalities, including viable renewable energy options
Task 4: Least-Cost Rural Electrification Plan
The objective was to identify which unelectrified loads can be best attended by connecting them to existing grids (centralized and isolated mini-grids) via grid extension (2 km) or densification (1 km); or, for existing isolated grids, the extension or interconnection these systems. IED performed an analysis to identify the potential of using the individual systems and mini-grids to serve as interim solutions in areas where the grid may reach, but not in the short term.
Based on the geospatial analysis done through the tool GEOSIM, a high level list of possible mini-grid projects and potential sites for this technology was drafted, and these sites were later prioritized based on economic parameters
