Description :
The project objective was to improve the coordination of rural electrification investments in Tanzania by maximizing the impact of rural electrification on sustainable development through establishing effective cross sectorial investment and planning capacities and instruments using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and the specialized rural electrification planning tool GEOSIM as the convening factor. This capacity building strengthened REA's capability for optimizing investments plans.
Geospatial rural electrification planning approach was experimented for 5 pilots regions (Morogoro, Pwani, Dodoma, Iringa and Lindi) by IED and a sixth one was done by REA with IED support (Tanga)
The project included the development of the Web based GIS platform (www.irep.rea.go.tz)

Description of the Actual Services Provided 1.1- Collection and compilation of multisectorial data at national level
1.2- Development of the GIS database and its web-based interface
1.3- Installation of an adapted Rural Electrification planning tool (software..)
2.1- Review of the policy and regulatory framework to support SPP and the promotion of renewable energy projects develoment
2.2- Organization of National workshops to define pilot regions and validate the Rural electrification planning strategy and objectives
2.3- Field surveys mission for Load Forecasting evaluation through demand surveys (6000 households within 150 villages surveyed)
2.4- Identification and characterization of potential resources for the 6 selected pilot regions (wind, hydro and biomass potentials)
2.5- Implementation of RE investment plan for the 6 pilot regions
3.1- Organization of intensive training sessions with the main project stakeholders (MEM, REA, EWURA, TANESCO...)
3.2- Follow-up of the « Learning by Doing » strategy set up with REA staff to produce the RE plan for one pilot region.
4.1 -Mobilization and follow-up of the national multisectorial group
4.2 -Organization of an International dissemination workshop
