Description :
In Burkina Faso, power production highly relies on the importation of petroleum products. In rural areas, off-grid systems are mostly powered by diesel generators.

Recently, the Electrification Development Fund (FDE) has turned towards the promotion of renewable energy in order to reduce country's dependency on fossil fuels. Some hybrid PV / Diesel projects have then been developed. However, initiatives are few and apart from PV solar energy, no other renewable energy sources are exploited.

SNV is supporting the emergence of new technologies and the use of additional renewable energy sources for power production in Burkina Faso. This study aims to identify potential sites for power production using agricultural residues, and to carry out a prefeasibility study of a rural electrification project in a selected site.

Description of the Actual Services Provided The objectives of the study were as follows:
A. Assess the potential to produce electricity from agricultural residues using a gasifier,
B. Define the structure of rural electrification projects based on isolated mini-grids and gasifier,
C. Define the necessary conditions to provide continuous electricity service at a reasonable cost to rural populations.

Activities carried out:
* Documentary review
* Identification of target areas
* Identification of potential sites
* Prefeasibility Study
* Analysis of constraints to be removed for the emergence of a dedicated market
