Description :
In the study area of the present project, the Poso-Tentena grid of central Sulawesi, 620 kW of diesel power supplies the area with an additional contribution of only 120 kW of hydro. In addition, there is a considerable shortage of power in the area and the utility (PLN) is operating the system at a severe loss as cost of power generated is double the tariff.
The Poso-Tentena area offers considerable mini hydro potential, with 115 sites already pre-identified, of a capacity of up to 2 600 kW.

Description of the Actual Services Provided The present study consisted in :
* undertaking a rough 15 years load forecast for the area,
* assessing the 15 mini hydro site,
* pre-selecting 3 sites and undertaking their technical potential (run of the river, small dam) analysis and their costing,
* estimating the economic viability of the sites,
* recommending next steps for site development.
The initial findings were extremely encouraging, with the first estimation of mini hydro energy cost only 1/6 th of diesel generated kWhs. The three mini hydro sites of a capacity ranging from 1875 kW to 4700 kW are also particularly cheap to develop, with costs in the range of 1500 to 1800 $ /kW ( @2400 Rp/$).
IED was later involved in the further development of these sites.
