Description :
The working theme for 1996 United Nations' Commission for sustainable development (CSD) was the sustainable development of rural areas. The contribution of France to the work of the CSD consisted in the organisation of a seminar in Marrakech in November 1995 on "The Sustainable Development of Rural Areas - Decentralised Electrification", which gathered some 350 people, players from North and South - policy makers, utilities, suppliers, NGOs...

Description of the Actual Services Provided The impact of the seminar and the importance of the recommendations to the CSD led ADEME to push the process further and to commission IED to write a "communication document" on the lessons learnt from the seminar. It was distributed at the CSD meeting of April 1996 in New York.
The document written in collaboration with a journalist highlights the key issues of decentralised rural electrification, the role of all actors and the actions which need to be taken.
Illustrated by examples and case studies, this synthesis aims at emphasising the 19 recommendations to the CSD in a readable fashion for non specialists.
