Description :
Although the European industry is clearly targeting the huge rural PV electrification market of developing countries, actual large scale opportunities have yet to materialise. The general objectives of the project are to :
* explore the technical prerequisites in order to develop the market on a viable basis,
* make decentralised electrification reliable and sustainable by ensuring that quality systems are used, adequately sized and selected in function of the services to be fulfilled and of local condition, well installed and maintained over the system's lifetime.
In a worldwide context, where the trend is to increase the use of solar PV systems, the European PV industry will have to collaborate increasingly with local industry in system manufacturing and assembly. Present lack of standardisation for PV installations, lack of system, component and manufacturing process certification does not favour quality development of industry and expansion of northern manufacturers. It also holds back investment of financing institutions and funding agencies.

Description of the Actual Services Provided The project will :
* Establish the state-of-the-art of PV rural electrification,
* Develop a range of quality control procedures for systems, components and manufacturing processes,
* Validate the procedures in a representative set of countries, selected in function of the results achieved in the data collection phase,
* Work and validate 3 to 4 models, from certification to country pilot testing,
* Disseminate widely the procedures developed, once they have been tested in the field.
