Description :
Hydroelectricity in the Philippines is still under developed. The database of the Department of Energy (DOE) states that there is a theoretical potential for 1140 MW installed capacity for units ranging for 1 to 10 MW, however, only 70 MW have been installed to date. A list of projects under development has been updated by the DOE. It includes 75 sites, generating a total power of 241 MW. Two regions are shown as a priority: Cantanduanes and the Palawan island, where site were pre-identified by the DOE.
An institutional reform process of the electrical sector started three years ago in the Philippines and numerous incentives now exist for the development of private electricity production, in particular for hydroelectricity.
