Description :
The European Union has commissioned a number of studies looking into labelling the electrical consumption for different appliances (refrigerators, washing machine -dishes, linen and boilers) within the framework of the SAVE program. Labelling is to-date effective in European Union member countries, for cold production machines and washing machines. The studies executed in the framework of SAVE in 95/96 have identified a potential 50 % energy savings in washing machines achievable by a change of user behaviour and an improvement of the energy efficiency of the machines.
The project aims to review the labelling of washing machines, and installation measures, so as to improve them.
The potential for energy savings identified in 95/96 has probably been reached by 2/3rds, it was however essentially based on energy savings for a cycle wash at 60ºC. However, the behaviour of users has changed to a growing utilization of washing cycles at lower temperature and to inferior loads. Energy savings will therefore be analysed according to these new patterns of use, by taking into account washing and rinsing performances and the evolution of the washing powders.

Description of the Actual Services Provided IED intervenes in this study on three points :
* analysis of the energy efficiency of current machines, essentially via the database realized by constructors,
* elaborating scenarios of energy consumption of washing machines,
* providing data concerning France, especially on the behaviour of users.
