Description :
The use of cooling systems is increasing in Western Africa, mainly for domestic refrigeration, central refrigeration systems in commercial and industrial food storage rooms, and air conditioning (mainly in buildings, and also in the textile sector). The objective of the project is to limit the environmental impact of cooling systems through the combination of electricity savings and reduction of Depleting Ozone Substances. In addition to the improved environmental impact, expected benefits of the project include the reduction of required investment in power production facilities, and a modernized food distribution chain.

Description of the Actual Services Provided Specific activities include :
* analysis of existing data,
* elaboration of a database of main centralised cooling facilities (food industry, central air conditioning systems), brief visits to the main sites (industries, agriculture and fishing storage rooms, hotels, buildings, etc.),
* evaluation of electricity saving potential in several pilot cases, definition of investment required for modernising the facilities, elaboration of programmes leading to 25% savings with payback period less than 5 years,
* extrapolation of results and elaboration of a global investment programme for the region, taking into account different financing sources.
