Description :
Thanks to its in-depth knowledge of the Mauritanian context and of the ADER agency, IED has participated with a team of experts to the extension of the decentralised rural electrification programme in Mauritania, funded by UNDP/GEF.
The main objective of the project was to determine feasibility for deployment of two different types of renewable electrical generation technologies in rural areas. One technology has focused on wind turbine/diesel generator packages that would supply power to fishing villages along the coastline. But IED has mainly been in charge of the feasibility study for the other technology that involves solar PV panels.

Description of the Actual Services Provided The investigations have focus on power supply to individual homes, community institutions and small businesses (refrigeration & pumping) in villages in the desert region of Mauritania.
The project feasibility report presented innovative approaches, recommended technologies, estimated project costs and financial projections, and recommended ownership/management structure.
In parallel, IED has been leading an assessment study on ADER needs for capacity building and institutional strengthening for effective project implementation of the 2 previous components (wind & solar). A detailed programme has been proposed to reinforce ADER and other stakeholders.
