Description :
Sidi Bernoussi Zenata (ZISB), the industrial area of Casablanca is recognized as acting as an important hub for Moroccan manufacturing and industries over time; it is one of the oldest industrial zones in the country. In total about 750 companies are operating over an area of 400 ha and generate a cumulative turnover of 2 billion Dirhams (0.18 billion Euro). The area has evolved over time haphazardly to become the main industrial zone, this unstructured development is reflected in the increasing malfunctioning of the zone.
These growing constraints hamper the further development of the industries not to mention their competitivety within opening international markets as their aspirations to meet stringent environmental management norms like (ISO 14000) become extremely difficult to reach. Knowing that to mobilize financing and to bring change to the area requires joint efforts, the industries have come together and established an association called “IZDIHAR”.
   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description of the Actual Services Provided The association IZDIHAR in 1999 engaged itself in a large « clean-up » mission. With financing from ESMAP, the French Ministry of Foreign Affaires and ADEME a study assessing concrete steps towards improving the environmental and energy standards in the area was conducted in the zone.
This was then followed up by a project to implement concrete actions in the zone over a three year period (2003-2006). This was subsidized by FFEM and GEF and covered the following three main principle activities :
- Carry out energy audits and improve the energy footprint of 70 industries within the zone,
- Improve the environmental and social conditions of the zone,
- Development of a governing structure in the industrial zone for energy efficiency activities.
In addition to the technical attributes of the project, positive impacts are expected to affect the industries themselves through the more social and environmental activities of IZDIHAR (rehabilitation of the zone, health and safety, education of workers, improvement on the infrastructure, transport, waste management, etc.).
