Building start-up of IEDInvest's first small hydropower project in Cameroon

IED Invest have officially launched the building of its first small hydropower project in Cameroon, on Mbakaou-Carrière site.
Offering a capacity of 1.4 MW and an annual output of 11.2 GW / h, this project will increase the quality of electricity services in the Adamawa region, particularly in terms of stability of supply, and participate to the national rural electrification policy by increasing the number of subscribers, while allowing the creation of sustainable local jobs and the reduction of CO2 emissions.

IMG 3690The Cameroonian electricity sector will also benefit from cheaper electricity than that produced by existing thermal power plants.
This project is a good sample of international public / private partnerships, associating IED group, Cameroonian’s Ministry of Energy, Rural Electrification Agency, ARSEL (regulation), ENEO company (distribution ), with financial support of European Union and pre-financing by BGFI bank. In addition, French Global Environment Fund, IED Invest's historic partner in Asia, is also supporting this project.

Commissioning of the Mbakaou-Carrière hydropower plant is planned for the end of 2020-first quarter of 2021.

IED is working on potential for electrification by mini solar networks in Ivory Coast

IED has been working since the end of 2018, in partnership with FINERGREEN, on a feasibility study for decentralized electrification by photovoltaic solar power plants of 24 villages in Ivory Coast, on behalf of Expertise France. In the current context of strong expansion of the national network in Côte d'Ivoire, IED and FINERGREEN are developing a simulation and decision support tool to direct the financing of decentralized solar solutions to the villages for which they are located. the most adapted.

Our environmental responsibility is important

In the frame of our environmental & social policy, IED compensates for its carbon emissions and supports 2 projects certified "Climate+" by Gold Standard (allows climate and development initiatives to quantify, certify, and maximise their impacts toward climate security and sustainable development).

Travels in our working countries generated 187 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2018. The carbon-offsetting process allows for participation in projects that have a significant impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The projects supported are:


- Kenya Biogas Program - 149 T: Domestic biodigestors provide a means for pastoralists to reduce their reliance on polluting firewood and expensive fossil fuels.


-Safe Water Access in Rwanda - 38 T : Provide clean and safe water by identifying and rehabilitating failed boreholes. A continuous maintenance program, combined with trainig on water and sanitation, ensures that a safe and reliable water supply is maintained in the community. Among other things, this allows a reduction in firewood expenses, leaving money for free for other household expenses and reducing pressure on local fauna and flora and ecosystems due to reduced deforestation.

IED works on capacity building in Benin

Three weeks of training were organized in IED premises in Cotonou on rural electrification planning using the GEOSIM software. This training was provided for officials from the Beninese Agency for Rural Electrification and Energy Management, the Beninese Electricity Company of the Ministry of Energy and the Regulatory Agency of Benin. The training was conducted over three weeks and covered the following topics.

-Mastery of geographic information systems: establishment and consolidation of georeferenced databases at the nation20190301 133933al level.

-Spatial analysis: establishment of a priority order among the localities to be electrified according to their development potential calculated on the basis of the presence of socio-economic infrastructures.

-Demand forecasting: forecasting energy consumption and peak power demand for all the villages concerned using a bottom-up method.

-Planning of medium voltage network extensions, optimal layout of electricity distribution lines, establishment of an investment plan, electrical validation of proposed extensions.

-Planning of mini-grid power options powered by renewable energies or gensets. Covered were Hydroelectric, Biomass and Solar-PV technologies.

-Pre-electrification needs studies for the last isolated localities not covered by the previous components.

At the end of this training, trainees were able to carry out nationwide planning for rural electrification for Benin. Visio-Conferences distance learning sessions are planned for the coming months.


IED trains SENELEC staff

As part of the capacity building program initiated at the end of 2018 in Dakar, IED currently hosts 2 delegations from SENELEC (Senegal national electricity company) for several training sessions held throughout February and March 2019. The training focuses on Geographic Information Systems and the dimensioning of distribution network and electrical calculation, and will enable SENELEC staff to better control the technical issues related to the deployment and maintenance of distribution networks under the responsibility of the national company with in particular the use of specialized tools (GIS database, GISELEC software ...).

This training time also allowed for bilateral meetings with French industries in the sector and visits to the Smartgrid (ENEDIS) and Rural Electrification (MICHAUD) showrooms.
