Presentation of the update of the Master Plan for the Development of the Beninese Electricity Sector

Bénin4

5 years after its first version carried out by IED, the Ministry of Energy of Benin has once again entrusted our teams to carry out the studies relating to the master plan for the development of the Beninese electricity sector.

On 7 and 8 July, the workshop was held in Grand Popo to present the results of the study to representatives of the sector:  more than 40 participants debated the results for 2 days in order to be able to produce a final version of the document that will be presented to the Council of Ministers.

The studies were carried out using the electrical planning software suite:

  • Demand Forecasting: DAP
  • Planning of means of production: GAP
  • Transport network studies: NAP

This document will let the Beninese government to project itself by 2045 for decision-making in terms of investments in electricity generation and transmission infrastructures.

Completion of Uganda's National Electrification Strategy

IED Consult this month handed over Uganda's National Electrification Strategy (NES) to its Ministry of Energy and Mines Development.

As part of the national programme of "Extension and Strengthening of the Electricity Grid", the definition of this NES financed by the World Bank, was primarily aimed at assisting the Ugandan Ministry of Energy in establishing a diagnosis of the institutional framework governing the electricity sector.

The development of a viable and realistic electrification plan aimed at connecting the 10 million households by 2030 (universal access objective) was this NES second major challenge.

This NES was largely carried out using the GEOSIM® planning assistance software, developed in-house by IED. A set of performance indicators have also been developed to enable the monitoring and the effective evaluation of the SNE by the various Ugandan institutions, in accordance with the principle of sustainability of their actions, so important to IED employees.

There is no doubt that this tool will be of great help for the Ugandan authorities in their future investment choices in favor of future-proof energy infrastructures.

Development of entrepreneurship in Burkina Faso : IED acts at source by promoting access to electricity and telecommunications

Two well-known topics at the roots of entrepreneurial difficulties, but rarely studied jointly ! We are therefore very pleased that ENABEL, the Belgian Development Agency, is giving us this opportunity, by entrusting us to carry out of a study on this  subject in Burkina Faso.

The objective of the project is to propose adapted solutions to improve access to energy and connectivity services (telephony, internet) in order to facilitate the development of entrepreneurship  in the Central East Region.

IED by partnering with Albaron Digital, a board agency dedicated to telecommunications and digital, will seek to explore what synergies can be between two different sectors of activity, but which need each other to develop solutions for the development of Burkinabe populations.

The investigations are currently under way, with a presentation of the results of the study scheduled for mid-July.

Benin: mobile money works to pay one’s electricity connection costs and to be effectively connected to the national operator, the SBEE! Already more than one million euros raised thanks to IED !

The PRERA project aims to extend the SBEE's electricity networks in the urban commune of Abomey-Calavi and 81 villages in the Atlantique department.

Beyond its role as prime contractor for the supervision of works (posts and lines excluding taxes, distribution works, etc.), IED is in charge of the social intermediation of the project, to say to connect the most households, infrastructures and economic actors to electricity.

This consisted in concrete terms to addressing/georeferencing potential customers throughout the project area, then to provide to eligible customers (those positioned less  than 40 meters from the new network) a viable solution for paying their connection costs via mobile money, to avoid travel and administrative constraints.

At the time of May 2021, IED identified requests for more than 40,000 electricity meters, and collected more than one million euros (more than 660 million FCFA) of connection costs, allowing more than 8,000 customers to be connected to a reliable and quality electricity network. And the numbers are growing every day!

This million euros reached in 10 months is symbolic, and attests the commercial potential of this type of innovative intervention, of which IED is the designer, the developer and the manager!
